Heidi Vogels

Vogels regularly visited Fez to film and work together with Rajae Drissi, who was born and still lives there, and with whom a friendship developed. Through the stories and memories of Rajae and the other protagonists, a picture of the city’s history and culture emerges. Vogels’ work evokes the gardens they remember and portrays Fez as a city that profoundly entwines everyday reality with the worlds of memory and imagination. At the heart of the project is both an awareness that the gardens are disappearing and a sense of the mythical worlds these gardens are still connected to within the entanglement of past, present and future.

The entire Gardens of Fez project comprises a rich constellation of stories, film fragments, publications, and exhibitions, culminating later this year in the single-screen documentary film Gardens of Fez.
