Host Country: Finland
Every year, art students from the host country compete for the TENT Academy Best Foreign Film Award. Germany, the Benelux, Finland, Turkey, and Greece were previous runners in this category. Finland has a rich history in video art and continues to produce internationally known artists such as Mika Taanila (dOCUMENTA 2012, IFFR 2013 at TENT), and internationally exhibiting young artists such as Pilvi Takala and Erkka Nissinen. In 2012, The International Film Festival Rotterdam spotlighted the legendary Finnish filmmaker Mikko Niskanen and director Peter von Bagh, who is co-founder (along with the Kaurismäki- brothers in 1986) and artistic director of the Midnight Sun Festival in Sodankyla. Finland’s Aalto University School of Art and Design, was the first academy to offer a practice-based PhD program for audio-visual artists. By creating an exchange between Finnish and Dutch artists, TENT encourages collaborations and crossovers and stimulates international success.
