Currently, soils in Rotterdam are classified in relation to their toxicity and they are referred to as “nature”, “agriculture”, “living”, “industrial” and “highly contaminated” soils. In GisWeb 2.2 , a mapping tool from the municipality with spatial information about the city’s soil situation, these different zones are described as abstracted straight lines running across neighbourhoods and infrastructures. But, how do these limits work when our shovels break the two-dimensionality of the map? Can soils be contained and controlled? Should we think of soils as material or a medium that holds ecosystems together?
Starting at TENT, in the city centre, we will head towards the Soil Bank from the Gemeente Rotterdam, where soils collected within the municipality are temporarily deposited for testing, classifying, and possible enrichment, before relocation. After this, we will travel to the Voedseltuin in Rotterdam West, the foundations of which were built with relocated soils which now sustain a multi-layered community project, demonstrating the transformative potential of green spaces within the urban fabric. There we will be greeted by a delicious vegan lunch.
