OPENING OPTIC MOUNTAINEERING, HAPPYLAND – AUTHENTIC BOYS, TENT ACADEMY AWARDS 2016 AND THE BACK ROOM- ARIE DE GROOT

On Thursday 21 juli, TENT opens four new exhibitions; Optic Mountaineering, Happyland – Authentic Boys, TENT Academy Awards 2016 en The Back Room- Arie de Groot. Music by dj Richelle Soigni.

Optic Mountaineering
This group exhibition features work by thirteen artists as part of a long-term cultural exchange between Basel and Rotterdam. For fifteen years, Atelier Mondial in Basel and Kaus Australis artists’ initiative in Rotterdam have jointly organised residencies for talented artists. Independent curator Annina Zimmermann, who was also the exchange’s first resident, curates the exhibition.

Happyland
In ‘Happyland’, Authentic Boys artist collective define five groups of travellers and the paths they tread toward personal happiness. One group is homely, another rebels against society, and the others either seek hardship, glamorous luxury, or the purity of nature. What their journeys have in common is a search for the authentic self: a mystical tour and profound existential quest for self-realisation. In this regard, these contemporary tourists are reminiscent of the pilgrims of yesteryear. Authentic Boys humorously portray the vacationers, interspersing serious contemplation with playful rebellion.

The Back Room – Arie de Groot
TENT and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen jointly present The Back Room, a four-part solo exhibition of underexposed yet iconic Rotterdam artists. Curator Noor Mertens, of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, presents work by an older generation of artists in the context of TENT’s current programme. This summer, TENT focuses on the work of artist Arie de Groot.

TENT Academy Awards 2016
The TENT Academy Awards (TAA) is the annual competition for the best graduation films, shorts, and animations from all Dutch art academies and a host country. Every year, a team of expert scouts select the best audio-visual work from graduation exhibitions. During the TAA screening and award show these works are judged by a jury composed of prominent figures from both the art and film worlds, and they select the winners of the TENT Academy Award and the Best Foreign Film Award. The TAA 2016 jury members are Roos Gortzak (director Vleeshal, Middelburg), Giovanni Carmine (director Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Switzerland), Sabine Himmelsbach (Haus der Electronic Künste Basel, Switzerland), and the artist duo and winners of the TAA 2009 Witte van Hulzen & Sander Breure. The respective winners are awarded a residency in Switzerland and Rotterdam, during which they have the opportunity to develop their burgeoning practice and get to know another culture.
