THUIS bij TENT

From 14.12.2018 to 8.3.2019

Through the device of the monologue, we accompany ten makers who explore their identity. The language, form, and tone they adopt are as specific and individual as the story they want to impart. The monologue provides the makers with a method for establishing new perspectives or a moment for sharing stories yet to be heard in the public domain. This mode of address is also a way to claim a place, in the city, in contemporary culture, in society, and at TENT as a platform in the city. To accommodate these perspectives, the audience is asked to lend a listening ear but to contain their own stories or viewpoints. Far from being passive, attentive listening is a constructive activity that fosters space for one other.

TENT on TOUR

Subsequent to HOME at TENT is the TENT on TOUR programme, in which the same ten makers bring the audience into their world by using the city as an extension of themselves. More detailed information and dates to follow soon.

Mama’s Couch

Parallel to this programme, Gyonne Goedhoop hosts Mama’s Couch, a series of intimate and informal encounters loosely inspired by the European tradition of the salon. Popular in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Europe and usually organised by women, salons were exclusive gatherings for those not interested in the status quo. The invited attendees could exchange knowledge and ideas in new ways, and this would eventually have a significant impact on the world beyond the salon’s closed doors. Whereas salons catered for the elite and completely excluded people of colour, Mama’s Couch gives the power of informal knowledge exchange a contemporary twist. What space arises when we merge the salon tradition with the Caribbean feeling of being at home on mother’s sofa, the place where love and sorrow can be shared in complete safety? Mama’s Couch is all about sharing and acknowledging personal stories as a source of knowledge and as a reflection on life in today’s society.
