Next up | TENT Welcomes: ‘An Invitation to Dance’
Opening: Sunday 26 May 16.00–18.00. Location: TENT Rotterdam, Witte de Withstraat 50 Admission: free
On Sunday 26 May 2019, TENT opens ‘An Invitation to Dance’, a film installation made by film-maker Noud Heerkens and choreographer Loïc Perela. The work, presented as part of the Dansateliers’ 25th anniversary, results from an investigation into the cinematic experience of dance. In a converted dance arena at TENT, this work combines dance, cinema, and technology, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of dancers on the canvas. Martine Dekker, director of CINEDANS, opens the installation.
The installation ‘An Invitation to DANCE’ has no environment, no notion of time. There are five bodies, five individuals amplified through the beat of the music, all caught in the same endlessly repeating impulse. They can’t stop dancing. The generic installation constantly changes due to its underlying software. ‘It’s a form of mental interaction’, says filmmaker Heerkens, whose research into the relationship between physicality and experience began in 2015. The way visitors move through the space changes the view of the work, determining their associations through a multifaceted and changing flow of dance images.
From 15:00 to17:00 on Sunday 23 June 2019, Heerkens and Perela will present their three-year collaboration during a finissage in the installation.
An Invitation to Dance is part of the Dansateliers’ 25th anniversary. On June 7 and 8, Dansateliers concludes its anniversary year with the event 25 Years Dansateliers: Celebrating Movement, including dance works by choreographer Loïc Perela.
Noud Heerkens (1954, Tilburg) is a Dutch filmmaker. He also teaches at various art academies, including the Master Institute of Visual Cultures. His many installations, dance, and fiction films explore the loneliness of postmodern people. He is now working on his 2nd feature film project, The Expectation. Loïc Perela (Lyon, 1983) is currently Dansateliers’ resident artist and has been working as an independent choreographer in Rotterdam, and beyond, since 2012. In 2015 he won the Dutch Dance Days prize. He is currently studying Arts and Humanities at the Open University, UK.
TENT Welcomes guest programme began in 2017 and offers space for temporary initiatives at TENT Rotterdam.
