Modern Muses is the new mural by artist Naomi Rozalina King at Bellamystraat 64–66 in Spangen. The work is a powerful ode to the (primal) women, mothers, girls, Anne Annes, and wise ladies who move through Rotterdam-West every day. With or without headscarves, with tattoos, symbols, or jewelry: these women are the beating heart of the neighborhood.
The mural was commissioned by TENT Rotterdam, Municipality of Rotterdam en City of Rotterdam, and was developed in intensive collaboration with women from the neighborhood. In joint sessions, they shared personal stories, experiences, and perspectives on representation and visibility. Their involvement ranged from shaping the design to choosing colors, clothing, and faces. The result is a work for women, by women.
Modern Muses is part of the international project Inform Women, Transform Lives of The Carter Center, which has 35 participating cities worldwide. King was inspired by the women who made her feel welcome in Rotterdam and asked the residents: What women do you see when you walk through West? This question forms the foundation of the mural.
The creative process was a true community project: mothers, aunts, children, and partners joined in the painting, as if it were their own wall. King's signature, oversaturated, almost fairytale-like style ensures that no one can overlook these women—especially in neighborhoods where, she believes, color and visibility are desperately needed.
The unveiling of Modern Muses marks a moment of recognition and connection in Rotterdam's Year of the Woman. The mural is an invitation to reflect on the women who make our city tick.
