Designed by C.B. van der Tak, this building was constructed in 1872-74 to house a Hogere Burgerschool (higher civic school). It underwent multiple reconstructions, including the addition of a third floor in 1954. In 1986, the Rotterdam Art Foundation, a municipal policy and funding agency, began studying possibilities for the foundation of an “art house”, resulting in the inauguration of Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in 1990. The institution has been housed here since then, and acquired the building in 1997. Since 1999, the building also provides a home to Tent, the exhibition venue of CBK Rotterdam for art in the Rotterdam context.
