Walk on By is an exhibition and cultural exchange between Rotterdam and Baltimore, revolving around diaspora cultures and community connections in both cities. Curator and initiator Joy Davis from Baltimore paired three artists from each city to explore how they connect socially and spiritually with their communities through their art.

The result is an exhibition of photographs, paintings, and murals that tell stories from the multifaceted black culture and experience—not only through what the works represent, but also through how the artists use elements such as color, light, detail, and abstraction as artistic strategies. In doing so, the exhibition also celebrates the power of visual language to provide recognition across language barriers and to distance ourselves from the narratives that dominate public debate.

TENT involves more voices in Walk on By with an additional program. Artists Tamara Vierbergen and Sheray of Light develop a student project that results in a growing collective artwork; multidisciplinary choreographer Sheree Lenting launches her new performance Love in Transit; and spoken word artist Elten Kiene en Cult North realize a series of workshops and perform with young people around the question: “What stories are we not telling, and why not?”
