Brady’s film, Receiver, presented in the exhibition To Be Like Water, brings together footage of protest at a university for D/deaf students, a crossed telephone line conflict, a crossfire Q&A interrogation, scenes from an anechoic chamber, and lip reading practice. Each of the film’s chapters complicate and side-track expectations of a linear narrative, as we witness different emotions erupt, moods switch, and are confronted with a complicated history of communication and language as a social institution.
