‘Lenore’ is an adaptation of a ballad written by Gottfried August Bürger in 1773, with music by the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886). The text had a major impact on the development of romantic literature in Europe, especially vampire literature. Bram Stoker even cites it literally in Dracula.

Lenore awaits her beloved Wilhelm. At midnight, she is visited by an armoured horseman, who carries her to their marriage bed. At dawn, they arrive in a cemetery. The rider transforms into the figure of Death holding a scythe and an hourglass. The marriage bed turns out to be an open grave where Wilhelm’s skeleton lies.
