Thursday 07.02.2013, 20.00 hrs: Opening soloshow Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson – Asymmetry

On Thursday the 7th of February during Art Rotterdam the opening of the solo exhibition by the Rotterdam-Berlin based artists Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson will take place. During the opening, there will be a live performance of the audio-track from the Lobbyists music video (2009) by reggae artist Rass Motivated and band together with actress Caroline Dalton.
The survey exhibition gathers video-based, installation, sound and sculptural projects from the last decade. Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson’s work can be regarded as an ongoing investigation of the way in which life, society and the individual are influenced by socio-economic and political factors.

Saturday 09.02.2013, 15.00 – 17.00 hrs: Symposium – ASYMMETRY BEYOND ABSTRACTION
with: Nina Power, Adam Budak en/and Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson

Chapter One: ASYMMETRY BEYOND ABSTRACTION is the first part of the symposium and includes a lecture by British philosopher, writer, and activist Nina Power, followed by a roundtable discussion with the curator Adam Budak and the artists. In her lecture, Nina Power addresses the contemporary discourse around human rights from a philosophical perspective. She focuses in particular on the tensions between the idea of ​​the individual and the collective, law and justice, especially within protest law. During the discussion with the curator, Castro and Ólafsson will elaborate on the background of their work and explain the concept of asymmetry as a leading principle in the reality of the current socio-political situation.
Adam Budak was curator of modern art for the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC, and the Kunsthaus in Graz, Austria. He was a co-curator of Manifesta7 (2008)
