Exhibition conversation
The tour of Every Picture Tells A Story took the form of an exhibition conversation in which students were encouraged to do the talking. They were asked to think about painting and to formulate an opinion about it. Is it a contemporary medium or something from the past, like Rembrandt’s The Night Watch? Do any of the tour’s participants ever paint or use a camera? Why do these artists choose to paint? Is there something achieved through painting that can’t be done with photography, video, or even Photoshop? By looking at and talking through the exhibition, the students delved deeper into these issues.

Working in the artist’s studio
Workshop participants were given the opportunity to work in artist Hidde van Schie’s studio. He relocated his studio to TENT especially for the exhibition Every Picture Tells A Story. In this inspiring space, students could try out being an artist. The workshop was mainly focused on painting’s traditional aspects, and there was an introduction to its materials. Hidde van Schie introduced the students to painting on a large canvas and taught them how to apply paint: splashing, throwing, smearing, or subtle scraping. While painting, they discussed issues such as layering, composition, luck, and inspiration. The students worked together on a number of paintings, which were then exhibited at TENT.
