(11:06) Onder de Vleugel (Under the Wing) is an ode to Rotterdam under lockdown. It is the result of a collaboration between the artist Iratxe Jaio and her 11-year-old son Iñaki, who could not go to school for weeks because of the pandemic. The film is inspired by Wings of desire by Wim Wenders. A mysterious boy climbs up over the roofs of the city to listen to the people below, and takes notes of their thoughts on sheets of paper. These have been submitted as whispers by different people responding to a call on the social networks. More than 200 whispers have been recorded, in all kinds of languages, as if the world wanted to let the filmmaker and her son know that they did not stand alone in their feelings of isolation.

Over Online Cinema

Biografie

Iratxe Jaio (Spain 1976) is a visual artist based in Rotterdam. Since 2001, she forms an artist duo together with Klaas van Gorkum (The Netherlands 1975). Their practice could be described as a kind of experimental archaeology. It explores the social significance of existing objects and documents, by appropriating and reproducing them within a different context. They have participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Artium Museum in Vitoria-Gasteiz; ADN Platform in Barcelona; FRAC-Aquitaine in Bordeaux; MUSAC in Léon; Tabakalera in Donostia-San Sebastian; Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna; Fabra i Coats in Barcelona; De Appel in Amsterdam; or Konsthall C in Stockholm.
