About TENT

TENT is the platform for contemporary art in the Rotterdam context. We realize exhibitions, new productions, educational projects, performances and events with artists from the city and elsewhere, and host local partners and initiatives in our guest programme. Rotterdam’s vibrant urban culture is the basis for our activities, informing our engagement with topics and developments that matters here, as well as in the world around.

History
TENT forms the exhibitions department of CBK (the Center for Visual Arts) Rotterdam. On 9 September 1999, TENT opened its doors at Witte de Withstraat 50. TENT was established to show Rotterdam’s contemporary art in a broad context, with a great deal of attention to the interdisciplinary and international character that typifies Rotterdam art.

TENT is the follow up of Villa Alckmaer, the exhibition space of CBK (the Center for Visual Arts) Rotterdam, which had been located on the Westersingel since 1994. Initially, TENT was led by Ove Lucas, Arno van Roosmalen and Thomas Meijer zu Schlochtern. Ove Lucas became the director of CBK Rotterdam in 2006, where Thomas Meijer zu Schlochtern was responsible for international policy until February 2011. Arno van Roosmalen left in 2004 to become director of Stroom Den Haag. From 2006 to 2016, Mariette Dölle was the artistic leader of TENT. Since October 2016, Anke Bangma has taken up the position of artistic leader.

Commissioned by CBK Rotterdam, in 2019 we made this documentary about 20 years of TENT in collaboration with Christiaan van Schemerbeek (Studio Moois TV) and André Marques and Tim Wes (T&D).
