For the second time, TENT Rotterdam and Tate Young People’s Programmes work together on an exchange project for young creatives. Ten young people (18 – 25 yrs.) from Rotterdam and London participate in a workshop programme  where “Where does culture happen?” acts as the central guiding question.

In October, the group stayed in London for a week and explored this question together with three ‘provocateurs’: artist and curator Hamed Maiye, writer Abondance Matanda and sound artist Hanna Kemp-Welch. They took the group on a field trip and highlighted the significance of DIY on- and offline platforms for self-representation, living rooms as a space for the conservation of culture, and mechanisms around in- and exclusion. These meetings formed the basis of the interactive workstations that the group created in Tate Exchange. The public was invited to a corner shop, including corner shop sound system; a living room in which personal stories regarding culture were shared; and a game in which the public was confronted with the issues surrounding gentrification.

In November, the group will be spending a week in Rotterdam, ‘provocateurs’ Malique Mohamud, Stacii Samidin, Amenti Collective and Mami Bricks will be taking them on field trips to the places where, in their experience, culture is produced. Our cities are full of creative energy. Young makers come together on on- and offline platforms, take up public space themselves and exhibit art and culture on their own terms. This happens in bedrooms, on streets, online. The TENT x Tate group are also part of this generation themselves. How do they relate to the relationship between these means of cultural production and the public institution? How can these different personal and communal spaces where culture is produced be connected in an equal and productive manner?

On Friday 24th November the group presents their findings on Operator Radio (12:00 – 13:00u) and in TENT (18:00 – 19:00 hours).
