Burn! Filmscreening
Friday evening October 24, San Sebastian-based critic and curator Peio Aguirre will give an introduction to the screening of Burn! (Queimada), directed by Gillo Pontecorvo in 1969. The screening is part of the exhibition programme As Occasions by Wendelien van Oldenborgh. Although a feature film, Burn! addresses the postcolonial discourse with surprising accuracy: several of its findings are directly relevant to our modern society. The film, regarded as one of the masterpieces of the so-called ’political cinema’, describes an anti-colonial drama. In the leading role we see Marlon Brando as a nineteenth century British agent who is sent to a Caribbean island to stir up a revolt by sugar cane labourers against their Portuguese masters.
