Chapter One: ASYMMETRY BEYOND ABSTRACTION is the first part of the symposium and includes a lecture by British philosopher, writer, and activist Nina Power, followed by a roundtable discussion with the curator Adam Budak and the artists. In her lecture, Nina Power addresses the contemporary discourse around human rights from a philosophical perspective. She focuses in particular on the tensions between the idea of the individual and the collective, law and justice, especially within protest law. During the discussion with the curator, Castro and Ólafsson will elaborate on the background of their work and explain the concept of asymmetry as a leading principle in the reality of the current socio-political situation.

Nina Power
is currently Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Roehampton University, a popular commentator, and hosts the radio show ‘The Hour of Power’. She writes for Frieze and The Guardian on topics related to philosophy, law, protest, and feminism. She is currently working on two publications on the theme of work and the relationship between the public and politics. Nina Power works together with Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson on ‘ThE riGHt tO RighT’. For this project they deconstructed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and replaced it with a new manifesto ‘The Partial Declaration of Human Wrongs’, which can also be seen in the exhibition.

The work of Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson can be seen as an on-going investigation into the way life, society, and the individual are influenced by socio-economic and political factors. The exhibition ASYMMETRY is an overview of their work and can be seen at TENT from 7 February until 5 May.
