Visual culture is all-pervasive in everyday life: fashion, music videos, advertising, games; we all communicate through images. TENT believes that art is part of this visual culture. As well as of the imagination of the artist who, in TENT, is closer than you might think. TENT primarily shows work by (young) Rotterdam artists, who generally provide contributions to the educational programme of the exhibition in question.

In its exhibitions, TENT presents a wide range of conceptions of art, artists, and materials, and thus also offers a varied and fascinating educational programme. TENT’s educational activities are based on the themes raised by exhibiting artists. These are often socially relevant topics such as identity, being rooted, and feeling at home. But it is also possible for artists to take students along in a quest for inspiration and material.

The structure of our educational school projects consists of three components. Firstly, TENT visits the classroom to give an introduction to the exhibitions on offer. Subsequently, the students come to TENT for an interactive guided tour of the exhibition in question, and to (possibly) work on a group assignment in order to process what they have seen in the exhibition. A final lesson can be held at school to work out the assignments in more detail. This approach is applied to both primary and secondary education.

Students in art education (among others from the Willem de Kooning Academy Teacher programme) are often mobilized for our educational activities and projects. This enables us to work in small groups. What’s more, it often seems ‘as though you’re walking round the exhibition with your older brother or sister,’ as one student described it.
